Carestream, Harry & David and Grizzly Peak Winery hosted Business, Education and Culture Forums for the visiting delegation from China participating in the 4th annual International Conference on Oregon-China Investment, Culture, Education and Tourism. In addition to the Forums, the three day conference included a Rogue River Hellgate JetBoat excursion and BBQ dinner, a visit to a Native American Pow Wow, enjoyment at the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo at the Jackson County Expo, as well as a visit to Crater Lake. The goal is to promote the uniqueness of southern Oregon in business, education and tourism and to build trusted relationships.

This conference has become a substantial meeting place between leaders from Oregon and China. The purpose of the conference is to develop the foundation for strong business relationships as well as educational and cultural exchanges between southern Oregon and China. The goal is to promote the uniqueness of Oregon in business, education, culture and tourism; to build trusted relationship; to create synergy among participating organizations, and to build a reliable platform for collaboration and cooperation between Oregon and China for the long term.

Business Forum

Mr. Donald Paris, Carestream General Manager, provided the keynote address for the Business Forum which took place on May 31st in Medford. State Representatives Dennis Richardson and Wally Hicks delivered welcoming remarks as did Medford/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce CEO Brad Hicks. Representing China, Deputy Consul General Song Ru’an from the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco gave a keynote address followed by Economic and Commercial Consul XIA Shuguang, and a talk on Chinese Economic Changes by Professor Meng Xiangchun of Soochow University, China.

Education and Culture Forum

During the Education and Culture Forum at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland, Al and Virginia Silbowitz introduced the delegation to the growing southern Oregon wine industry. Keynotes were made by Cultural Consul ZHANG Jiexin from the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco on the "Brief Introduction to China’s Cultural Development", and Education Consul CHEN Zhengwen on "China-US Educational Exchanges & Cooperation in San Francisco Consular Districts." Oregon State Representative Dennis Richardson spoke on “Opening Minds of Rural Students—How Mandarin Language Distance Learning Has Helped Small Oregon Schools” and Mr. Shi Wu from Tianjin discussed how the Chinese Government is better utilizing its resources for education.

Business and Cultural Lunch at Harry & David

During the business and cultural lunch at Harry & David on June 1st CEO Craig Johnson provided a historical backdrop to the Rogue Valley and its growth in the agricultural industry. Pam Toray, Senior Vice President, discussed the current wide variety of products they offer and the company’s evolution. Toray has worked in China and brought first-hand experience in relating to this delegation. Among those attending this presentation and luncheon were senior Harry & David officers and business people from the port city of Tianjin, one of China’s major sea ports. Representative Dennis Richardson gave a prospective on the important and growing trading relationship between Oregon and China.
