The Southern Oregon—China Investment, Culture, Education and Tourism Conference has become a substantial meeting place between leaders from Oregon and China. This is developing the foundation for strong business relationships and educational and cultural exchanges.

The three day conference included a business conference, a Winery Gala Dinner at EdenVale Winery, a Rogue River Hellgate JetBoat excursion, a visit to a Native American Pow Wow, enjoyment at a Western BBQ and the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo at the Jackson County Expo, as well as a visit to Crater Lake. The goal is to promote the uniqueness of southern Oregon in business, education and tourism and to build trusted relationships.

Business Conference

The June 1st business conference was exceptional. It included a distinguished panel discussing "People to People Exchange, a Bridge to a Bright Future Between Oregon and China"; Co-Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives Bruce Hanna made his remarks and introduced Ambassador Gao, Consul General from San Francisco; Consul General Gao made a keynote speech on this same subject. The panelists include Tianjin Broadcasting, TV, and Film Bureau Director Guo Yunde; Chinese Consulate Education Counselor Shao Wei; Culture Counselor Sun Jianhua; Commercial Counselor Xia Xiang; PSU Confucius Institute Executive Director, Meiru Liu; RCC President, Peter Angstadt; OSF Executive Director, Paul Nicholson; Jackson County Commissioner CW Smith, and panel moderator Representative Dennis Richardson.

Signing of Higher Education MOU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony took place at the business conference between Rogue Community College, Oregon Institute of Technology and Shijiazhuang University in China. The MOU will pave the way for students to come from China to attend RCC for one year of orientation instruction, and then move on to OIT to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. This will add to the financial health of these institutions, our local economies, and develop greater cultural understanding. “Through signing the MOU, Chinese students will enthusiastically seek obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from OIT, a traditionally preferred degree for the Chinese,” stated Irene Kai, RCC instructor and President of Southern Oregon China Connection. “The implication for economic development of our region from this is huge.”

The attendance of high ranking Consul General Gao, coming to southern Oregon three years in a row, to highlight our region to China is unprecedented. Over the last two years the Chinese news organizations: China Daily, Xinhua News Agency (the largest in China), ICN TV and Portland Chinese Times have raised the profile of southern Oregon within China and with many Chinese speaking populations. The Consul General has said, “By supporting this conference, it will put southern Oregon on the map for the Chinese.”
